It is really tall, isn't it! Look how small the people look at the bottom of it. You wouldn't want to be standing underneath it during an earthquake! It would make a gigantic crash if it got chopped down. Mind you, I don't think it should ever be cut down as it is such an important part of NZ history. Dad and I went to visit this giant of a tree before you were born and it certainly was impressive! One day, I will take you for a trip to see it, too!
This is one really tall tree. He truly is magnificent when you stand below him. I am lucky enough to have seen Tane Mahuta. I was born in Northland so I lived up there for a few years. This was in my backyard, 'almost' !! It doesn't take long when you enter the forest to walk to Tane Mahuta. When you come around the corner and first see him it is truly amazing. I remember just standing there thinking whoah! That's a big tree! If you took a rugby field and stood it up on end, Tane Mahuta would be half the size! I really hope that they are able to get the disease that is effecting all the kauri trees in Northland under control. It is great that all the visitors are obeying the rules and washing their shoes when they enter and when they leave the forest. Hopefully this will stop the transfer of the disease. Hopefully you will get there one day too. You will have to add this to one of the places you would like to visit.
