I think the kiwi is a great choice. Like you say, it's not only a native bird but our national icon too. I just had a quick look at the Bird of the Year website and I'm happy to report that the kiwi has plenty of votes. :) I hope that the Forest and Bird organisation are able to use the donations they have received to better the living conditions of our kiwi. Have you ever seen one in real life? I've only ever seen kiwi at the zoo, and that was quite a struggle - their enclosures imitate night really well.
Thanks for your comment Mikey!! Yes, the kiwi isn't just an ordinary bird, it's our native bird. If kiwis weren't our native bird I would still chose it as the birds sleep in the night and are awake in the day. I have seen kiwis before but like you said they are quite hard to see in the dark. I have only seen them in zoos and the kiwi centre about 20 minutes from my home town. The only sad thing is there were HEAPS of votes for the other birds but not the kiwi! What bird would you vote for??
