Charles Upham sounds like an interesting guy! I noticed you wrote his first VC, did he receive more than one? That sounds like such a scary situation to run into a house full of German soldiers with machine guns! He must have been a very brave man. You are right, bring back the missing soldiers was very kind, he sounds like a bit of a legend! (no wonder they awarded him the VC!) He must have some amazing stories from his experiences at war. If you could ask him about anything now, what do you think you would ask?
